Spotting

A spot is one photo of one car, with the make and model, a rough place and a day. You post spots from the Redline Android app.

The in-app camera

Tap the red camera button. The top of the viewfinder shows your GPS fix and how accurate it is, like GPS ±6 m. Shoot the car and the spot carries that live location. A spot shot this way can be verified, which is worth full points.

Camera
Taken with the Redline camera, not picked from the gallery
Location
From the phone’s GPS, accurate to 100 m or better
Time
Posted within 30 minutes of taking it

If the GPS fix is rougher than about 250 m, the app asks you to drop a pin instead. Pinned spots post fine, they just aren’t verified.

Android’s “Approximate location” setting only gives the app a rough fix. The camera tells you when that’s the case and offers “Use precise location”.

Name the car

Search the catalog by make or model. Type 911 and you get every 911 we list, GT3 RS included. Niche chips (German, JDM, Italian and the rest) narrow the list. Right now the catalog has 61 makes and 504 models.

The spot’s niche tags come from the model you pick, so the feed and map filters work without you tagging anything. The rarity comes from the model too: see Rarity, tiers and points.

Can’t find it?

Tap “Can’t find it?” and type a name. A custom name posts as Common, and other spotters can’t confirm it. A moderator can match it to a catalog model later, and the tier and points are worked out again when they do.

Blur plates and faces

Before you post, tap a number plate or a face to put a box over it. Drag to move it, pull the corner to resize. You get up to 10 boxes.

When the photo reaches our server, it pixelates and blurs those boxes before anything is saved. The unblurred photo is never stored, so the blur can’t be undone.

Nothing detects plates or faces automatically yet. Box every readable plate yourself, even on a car you love. Automatic blur is on the list for later.

Posting and the share card

Add a caption if you want (280 characters) and post. The app plays the rarity reveal: the needle sweeps, the tier lands, the points count up.

From there, open the share card. It’s a 9:16 image with your photo, the model, tier, points and area, sized for an Instagram story or a WhatsApp status.

What gets stripped

A phone photo carries a lot of hidden data, including GPS and the exact time. The server reads the location and the time once, then stores only re-encoded copies of the photo with all of that metadata removed. More on this in Privacy and safety.
